From New York to Byzantium, via Venice

Sailing to Byzantium: 6 New York Artists in Venice, Work by Walter Robinson | Courtesy Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa

At Palazzetto Tito, the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa presents Sailing to Byzantium. 6 New York Artists in Venice, a group exhibition that treats Venice as a mental space rather than a backdrop. Curated by Richard Milazzo, the show brings together Donald Baechler, Ross Bleckner, Peter Halley, Vik Muniz, Peter Nagy and Walter Robinson, six key figures of the New York art scene from the 1980s to the early 2000s, invited to engage with the idea of passage suggested by the title, drawn from a poem by W.B. Yeats. The project focuses on works on paper and print-based practices, understood not as a technical appendix but as a critical language. Print becomes the site where images multiply, shift and are reconsidered, questioning the relationship between original, copy and memory. Within a shared framework, clear differences emerge: Baechler’s direct, sign-based imagery, Bleckner’s suspended atmospheres, Halley’s structural systems, Muniz’s perceptual short circuits, Nagy’s obsession with sign systems and Robinson’s sharp, pop-inflected narrative tone.
