The original and daring version of The Sorrows of the Young Werther by Goethe (1774) written between 1885 and 1887 by Jules Massenet on a libretto in French by Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann, inspired by the novel of the same name. Massenet's lyric drama in four acts was premiered on a libretto translated into German at the Vienna State Opera on February 16th, 1892 and in French at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva on December 27th 1892, and was immediately a great success. To this day Massenet's Werther is represented in French in opera houses all over the world - at the Fenice in the original language with Italian and English surtitles, under the direction of Guillaume Tourniaire, directed by Rosetta Cucchi, scenes by Tiziano Santi and costumes by Claudia Pernigotti.
